Happy Lunar New Year !

This year, the Lunar New Year arrived earlier than the previous years so it was a rather wet but still fairly good new years.

Every LNY is almost the same. We’ll visit, eat and gamble, and eat. However, I do not find LNY as exciting as it was when I was growing up. It just felt like a routine and each year, mundane questions are to be answered to relatives whom you’ve not seen for awhile. When I was younger, I was always excited about receiving red packets and would anxiously open them (in discreet) and count how much money I’ve received for the day (or the rest of the LNY). But now, I do not even open them and would eventually hand what I received to my mother to put aside for me. (If I do not do it, I’d spent what I received on a pair of Lanvin or something. Not good.)

Also, I do not feel like I basked in the festive mood as I did before. There wasnt much new years spirit for I did not see lions/dragon dancers performing on the streets. Or maybe I just missed them completely. I’d love to spend my LNY in China if given the chance. I’d want to hear fire crackers pop, and fireworks illuminating the skies. (Fire crackers are banned in Singapore for your info. How sad.)

However, Im still really glad to spend it with my family and friends. No matter how mundane LNY might be now, Im still glad that our Chinese traditions are still intact. It is something really important in our culture and I do not wish to see this fade in future.

I recently read an article explaining how Peking Opera in China is becoming less popular with the young people these days. This article reminded me of my favourite movie of all time : Farewell My Concubine; starring Leslie Cheung and Gong Li. Ok, this sparked some inspiration for my next post.

Anthology Ballet Flats

To me, comfort is the utmost important and when it comes to walking, our feet bring us to many places and the amount of distance we travelled is dependent on them.

I am fussy when it comes to buying shoes so it took me awhile to hunt for my ideal pair of ballet flats. I wanted a pair of ballet flats for the longest time but it took me really long to decide if I should spend $300< for a pair of Repettos or $500<< for a pair of Bally or Lanvin (which I’ve been lusting over for a couple of years now).

But I was really happy when I saw this pair of Anthology flats. Its reasonably priced and after I broke into the shoe (about twice), it got really comfy!

Invest in Anthology ballet flats if you’re looking for a pretty, comfy and reasonably priced pair of shoe.

I like this song. It made me feel young. I think it made us all feel young when we listen to it.
I posted 2 of the same song but different video clip. One’s the official MTV whereas the other one is just a clip of a long-haired girl peeling an apple in bed. I preferred the apple peeling one if you asked me. It is a bit silly to watch a video clip of a girl peeling an apple in bed then popping down back to bed at the end. Why do I like it you may ask. It stirs curiosity in me. It is as if shes looking at something in front of her whilst peeling an apple. But from what I picked up, she could be watching TV ahahahaa.

1. Fruity Loops! I prefer the ones in Singapore because the ones sold in Melbourne are not as sweet.
2. Horlick flavoured kueh lapis! (Kueh Lapis is a traditional Indonesian layered spice cake, baked with butter and egg yolks.)
3. Chicken and scrambled egg, boiling on a pan.
4. Wanton Noodles at the famous Fei Fei Wanton Mee at Joo Chiat, Singapore.
5. Century Eggs (which I loathe). Just like the way it looked on the plate. I like the colours and how the texture looked. Almost a gradient.

Two Chefs

I had a really good dinner tonight.

We headed to Two Chefs Eating Place at Commonwealth Crescent and ordered some dishes that is their speciality. Among the food we had, I enjoyed the cold cockles with garlic and chilli, butter pork ribs with milk powder and 3 eggs + spinach dish. The butter pork ribs is something new for me because I never had pork ribs that was sprinkled with milk powder! Its so yummy and I really think you who are reading this and residing in SG, should head over to Commonwealth to try their food.

1. Latte at Jimmy Monkey Cafe – latte tasted normal.
2. Breakfast platter at Jimmy Monkey – the breakfast is quite shitty. I can do better eggs.
3. Fresh cockles Cha Kwey Teow at Parkway Parade Hawker Centre – really yummy! Had to Q, but it didnt take long! Go try if you are around that area!
4. A meaty affair at Kay Lee Roast Meat Joint – tried their famous roasted duck accompanied with roasted pork and cha siew platter. Loved the duck skin heh. Meat was quite tough though, but it tasted good. Not a good area to go to unless you drive. Alternatively, take a train to Tai Seng (circle line) and walk there.
5. Apple Crumble at Food for Thought – tasted normal, nothing special. At least it tasted better then the red velvet cake I ordered. It was SHIT.

There you go, a list of places I went for food back in Singapore and so far, Im rather disappointed with certain places I went. Gonna try out Pause Cafe at Bukit Merah. Hope it’ll not disappoint.

A dress made entirely out of condoms.

With AIDS awareness in mind, Vietnamese student Nguyen Minh Tuan made this dress named “Breaking the Condom Taboo” with 700 condoms. He created this dress in hopes to encourage Vietnamese people to use condoms and protect their loved ones against STDs.

P.S The condom dress glows in the dark too.

Girl with a Dragon Tattoo

Today, I caught the U.S version of Girl with a Dragon Tattoo directed by David Fincher, starring David Craig and Ronney Mara.

As compared to the Swedish version released in 2009 which I watched early last year, I found the Swedish version a tad darker… which I preferred.

But nonetheless, both were well-made adaptions. I wished the U.S version one was accompanied with subtitles though. Had quite a difficult time figuring out what they were saying at some point, during the movie.
